Sports Section Editor and Axe Reporter
The intellectual and charming Zev Wacks, has been a large contributor to the South Eugene High School Newspaper, The Axe, as well as South as a whole. As a member of the newspaper staff, Zev contributed greatly to creating a positive and inclusive environment for all students, writing enticing stories, and organizing engaging layouts for each issue. Zev has done everything from being President of South Eugene Student Government to setting off a school-wide motion-detected alarm when setting up for Homecoming. Track Meets, Debate Team, and Fall Fest, are just the tip of the iceberg for our star reporter. One of his proudest accomplishments during his time at South was being selected as one of Oregon’s delegates for the US Senate Youth Program. He recalls one of his favorite memories is joking with his team mates on the bus rides home from track meets.
While Zev will miss his time at South he can’t help but look forward to his future. Zev can’t wait to explore his interests further in college and grow more independent. Zev plans to attend the University of Oregon as a Stamps Scholar studying Political Science, Economics, and Spanish in the fall. “At least, that’s the plan for now” Zev says.
As a senior, Zev has learned a lot about how to navigate high school and make the most of his experience, “I’ve learned to be more outgoing and social. We’re a class of around 350 people that go to school together for four years and I still don’t know everyone,” Zev goes on to share his advice for incoming freshmen, “Don’t shy away from new activities and topics. So many people leave high school passionate about new subjects since they had a positive experience in a class or extracurricular activity that they happened to participate in.”
