This October, a new type of iPhone will be available to purchase: the iPhone Duo. On Sept. 1, new Apple CEO John Ternus released this new, foldable phone with much fanfare. It will have the largest display of any iPhone and will have connectivity with Apple pencil. These features are more similar to Apple iPads. It appears that the Duo will be a midway between a phone and a tablet, with the device being able to fit in a pocket. Starting price for the iPhone Duo will be $2,000. However, it is uncertain how much of a market there is for these foldable phones.

Apple’s iPhone Duo enters a packed market, competing with companies, such as Samsung, Google, and Chinese phone giant Huawei, that already have established folding phone products . Apple has had the benefit of these other companies’ trial and error, with Samsung’s Galaxy Fold being the first mass marketed, modern folding phone. Out of all smartphones, fold phones have about five percent of the market, and most people still consider the devices to be a gimmick. With the Duo’s high price and this limited market, Apple will have to exceed expectations. The phone will be available on Oct. 23.
