Axe Reporter

Story Frazier-Maskiell is a senior reporter on The Axe Newspaper, and she has a bright future ahead of her as a costume designer.

Story is a part of the EJL (Economic Justice League) as the clothing closet lead, and joined the Concert Choir this year. She said EJL has helped her understand work environments because of the busywork they have to do before school, and she feels proud of her job because the club helps provide and give back to the local community. She is also a part of Letters For Rose, a club where the members write letters to hospice patients. Story is very interested in knitting and crocheting, and she has a particular interest in costume and fashion design. She will be going to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for costume design, and is looking to pursue a career making costumes for film and theater.

Story first joined the newspaper in her junior year, as she wasn’t able to join as a sophomore, and she was very interested in the way students studied different types of journalism in Newspaper’s intro class, News Media I. She has been an important part of The Axe staff, and even got to participate in a deadline night during the 2024 presidential election, which provided a very interactive experience in the journalism world.

When asked about advice for students at South, Story said, “It’s really good to get involved [in a lot of programs]. There are so many programs at South, more than other schools, and you should really take advantage of that because there’s a huge range of interests that you can expand upon and so many clubs and long-term classes.”
