Axe Newspaper reporter Maya Robershaw has been on the staff since sophomore year and has grown tremendously during that time. “I think that Maya has become more confident, and she has really embraced using humor in her writing,” says Bobbie Willis. Maya has learned a lot since freshman year and has become more willing to take risks. “Newspaper has taught me a lot and has been transformative for me because I’ve gotten out of my comfort zone,” Maya said.
She is a very talented writer and has discovered what she truly loves about journalism while being in the class. “I like writing a lot, and even though I didn’t know I liked it at first, I really enjoy interviewing people and learning more about things that I’m curious about.” She is also very grateful for the friendships she has made in the class. “I’ve also been in Newspaper with my best friend Abby, which has been really great.”
In the fall, Maya will be attending the University of Oregon. Since she has been taking AP classes throughout high school, she already has many college credits and is excited to explore different opportunities and discover what career she may want to pursue in the future. One piece of advice Maya would give to someone coming into high school is to “communicate well with your teachers because they are really here to help you, and you don’t have to do everything on your own,” and also to “make connections with people.”
One way Maya has made connections is through being a three-year member of the South Eugene girls tennis team, with two of those years spent on varsity. While she was hesitant to join at first, she says, “I really ended up loving it, and I’ve made a lot of friendships with people who are really great.” As Maya prepares for this next chapter, she leaves behind a strong legacy of creativity, kindness, and curiosity, and there is no doubt she will continue making meaningful connections and pursuing what she loves wherever she goes next.
