How to live the summer months in Eugene to the fullest

For many high school students in Eugene, summer is the time we constantly look forward to: the warm weather, the beautiful rivers, and the cool breeze. As we dive into the summer months, our time often fills up with camping, traveling, swimming, summer jobs, ice cream, and many more fun activities. For some people, summer goes by at snail’s pace, seeming to drag on as they look forward to returning to school in the fall but for a lot of people it’s a period of time that goes by in a blink of an eye. For this reason, I want to talk about three ways to maximize your summer.

My number one tip is to get a summer job. If you save the majority of money you get in the summer, you’ll be set for the school year when it’s harder to manage a job. Getting a summer job as a high school student is a great way to dive into the working world, gather experience, and meet new people that sometimes even become lifelong friends.

My second tip is to try and spend as much time outdoors as possible. Oregon has some of the best hikes, swimming spots, and other places for recreational activities like biking, kayaking, or other sports. Some of the best places include the Willamette River, Silver Falls, and Waldo Lake which are all beautiful places to hike or swim. If you’re looking for overnight places for camping, Waldo also has great camping spots, as well as parks such as Honeymen on the coast near Florence and Fort Stevens State campground.

Lastly, my third tip on how to maximize your summer is to find a new hobby that brings you joy. I’d suggest something that you’ve never tried before, which could be anything from a new sport to a new art project. Some recommendations I have for sports include sand volleyball, spike ball, frisbee, mini golf, bocce ball, ping pong, bowling, and pickleball. Some other recommendations for fun activities include knitting, crocheting, sewing, painting, paper mache, and photography.

Summertime is more than just hot weather, it’s a time to explore and reinvent yourself, a time to find out what you want to surround yourself with. So as you head into the coming break, I hope you can find some activities to maximize your time. As a senior who is going into their last summer before college, I hope that all the seniors out there are able to enjoy this last one to their absolute fullest.
