Senior Burke Sherman is currently a member of the South Eugene varsity swim team. Seeing as it’s his last year, he’s been soaking in the last few months. With districts coming up the weekend of Feb. 14, Sherman and his teammates are gearing up for the intense meet.
“I’m feeling confident about districts,” he said. “We’ve always done really well when I’ve been at South, and it’s exciting to get to do it again for my senior year.” Swimmers are figuring out their events in the next few weeks, but some are still undecided.
“I haven’t decided what I’m swimming yet,” Sherman said, “but most likely the 100-meter backstroke and 200-meter individual medley.”
Sherman has developed important diligence in his habits and connections with people through the swim team. As high school winter sports seasons come to a close, many students are looking toward sports after high school. But for Sherman, that is not a path he is choosing to pursue. However, he has and continues to put effort into his sport until the end.
“I work by trying to unite people around a common goal,” he said. “The more we all feel like we’re stepping toward the same target, the more we’re going to feel united as a team rather than scattered.”
Junior Audrey Brokaw is currently a member of the South Eugene varsity swim team, and in the depth of the swim season Brokaw is feeling great. With districts coming up she’s been diligently preparing for the big meet alongside her team.
“I’m very excited for districts, everyone has been working so hard and I can’t wait to see what my team can do,” she said.
Having the 200-meter freestyle be her main event, Brokaw has to balance distance and sprinting that takes major discipline. But just as important as the discipline are the connections and friendships that are made along the way.
“My favorite part about swimming would definitely be getting to spend time with my friends and the feeling of accomplishment I get after completing a hard set,” Brokaw said.
Brokaw hopes to continue to swim recreationally after high school, as it will always be an important part of her life. When it comes down to it, being a part of a team is all about making it fun.
“I try to spend as much time with my teammates out of the pool as possible,” she said. “I love to encourage my teammates at swim meets and always make sure to cheer for everyone while they race. It’s definitely a lot easier to swim faster when you have a whole team cheering you on!”
