Swim Brief

As we move into late fall, it’s time to start thinking about the start of the swim season here at South Eugene High School. Morale is high and the team is feeling good about this season. Their coach, Taylor Cole, is in his fourth year of coaching South swim. Cole has been able to establish relationships with swimmers along with having plenty of experience on what training they need and how to set practices.

The connection between the upperclassmen and the lowerclassmen is also much stronger this year and it is something team members have been working to keep strong.

As far as goals go, the boys are aiming to place in the top three at state and the girls want to win districts again this year.

The team also has more swimmers this year than in previous years, but could always use new members! If you’re debating joining swim, swing by practice. There are no tryouts required, so go try it out if you’re thinking about it. Even if you’re not wanting to join, you can always go and cheer them on at meets this season, it should be a good season for South. Nordic Ski Brief

South’s Nordic Ski team is gearing up for another successful season. So far, there have been strength and conditioning practices at Ridgeline Rowing with a private trainer and the season officially starts on Nov. 17.

One of the team’s goals has been to remain financially accessible, as well as accessible time-commitment wise. Since the COVID-19 pandemic year, the team, including volunteer coaches and captains, has had to make significant recruitment efforts to build back the program. This year, the team has the most members since 2020.

“It feels amazing to watch more and more people fall in love with the sport,” Junior Kaia Murphy said. “For me, Nordic skiing is the perfect balance of community, commitment, and fun. I love being out in the mountains – it’s incredibly peaceful and really gives me so much joy.”

Their first race is Jan. 4 at Diamond Lake. Come by and support the team and find out more @sehsnordicski on Instagram.

Basketball Brief

The South Eugene High School Boys and Girls Basketball teams are preparing for an exciting season. The girls team is preparing for their first game on Dec. 3rd against the Sandy Pioneers and the boys are getting ready to face Churchill on the same day.

Spirits are high as we enter into a new basketball season coming off of a great season in the previous year. Many players are returning from the past year and the team is preparing to say goodbye to their senior players.

Both teams are starting the season with new coaches at the helm and players have expressed excitement towards these changes. The basketball community is only continuing to grow and change and it’s not too late to join in!  If basketball isn’t your thing that’s ok, it’s just as fun to watch and cheer at the games. The players love your support, to find more information about tryouts and games check out @sehs.mensbasketball and @sehswbb on Instagram.
