We’re deep into fall and the best fall activity is curling up on the couch or in bed with a warm apple cider and a cozy fall movie! Here are some suggestions for if you’re stuck on what to watch on a rainy fall day.

Bridge to Terabithia

Adapted from Katherine Paterson’s 1977 novel, and released in 2007, Bridge to Terabithia is the perfect cozy, nostalgic, fantasy movie to watch this fall. Jesse (Josh Hutcherson) is an average 10-year-old boy living in Lark Creek, VA during the fall of 1975. That is, until he meets class outcast, Leslie (AnnaSophia Robb), who shows him how to use his imagination to build a world they can explore and live in where magical creatures exist and anything is possible.

Labyrinth

This 1986 film directed by Jim Henson, follows 16-year-old Sarah Williams (Jennifer Connelly) as she works to get her baby brother back from the Goblin King Jareth (David Bowie). After a wish to have her little brother taken away actually comes true, she is given 13 hours to find her way through the labyrinth in order to get him back. Sarah makes enemies, as well as friends, as she navigates the challenges the Goblin King gives, while being torn between the family she loves and the man she loves.

Knives Out

Rian Johnson’s 2019 film, Knives Out, is the perfect murder mystery for a cozy fall night. World-renowned detective, Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) investigates the odd circumstances surrounding the death of famous crime novelist, Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer). As far as he is concerned, everyone in the Thrombey family is a suspect. Blanc will have to investigate every clue twice and double back more than once, in order to solve this peculiar mystery.

If after watching this film you are left wanting more, the sequel, Glass Onion, was released in 2022, winning the Critics Choice Movie Award for Best Comedy.

Pride and Prejudice

Jane Austin’s Pride and Prejudice was adapted into a film in 2005 by Joe Wright, starring Keira Knightly as the witty, independent, Elizabeth Bennet. This movie is the embodiment of the perfect cozy, emotional, fall romance movie. From love and hatred, to moody, rainy fall weather, it’s got it all. When Mr. Darcy comes to town, Elizabeth is facing immense pressure from her parents and family to find a wealthy husband and settle down. While Elizabeth was not opposed to the idea of marriage, she only wanted to marry for love and respect, not money. Shockingly, she begins to fall in love with Mr. Darcy; however his withdrawn personality begins to get in the way of their blooming romance.
