Lacrosse season is here and is off to a great start.
The sun is sticking around longer and the days are becoming warmer, which can only mean one thing: spring is here with one of the most exciting and dramatic sports as well. Lacrosse is back in season! Players from the girls’ and boys’ teams have been working hard during the offseason and hope to have another strong season.
Both teams are starting off strong, with both boys and girls winning their season openers.
“It’s great to be back. I love the energy that comes with the lacrosse season,” South junior Ronan Gleeson said.
With the boys having finished last year as Southwest Conference champions and the girls coming off a strong season, as well, both teams look to improve their performances in 2025. “We have a lot of returning players this year and the chemistry seems to be really good,” South junior Scarlett Travis said.
Not only is lacrosse a fun sport for the players, but for students and the audience, as well. Although it might not be the most universally famous sport out there, many students at South look forward to the lacrosse season.
“I love watching the lacrosse games because of the energy and how intense it is,” South junior Cathy Qin said.
One of the best parts of any sport is watching the underclassmen learn from the upperclassmen.
“I always look out for the underclassmen because as a junior who has been playing for a while, I want to help them learn and become better at the game of lacrosse,” Gleeson said.
The juniors and seniors on the team have had to really step into a leadership role for the younger new kids and help them experience what it is like to play lacrosse at the high school level. As a fan, you can expect many intense and close matchups against rivals like Sheldon and West Linn.
If you are interested in joining the South Eugene lacrosse team for their next season, you should go to one of the games and see what it’s like. You may also take it one step farther and talk to some of the players and Head Coach Brian Naghski and ask them what it is like to play lacrosse. With many people returning and a lot of new additions to both teams, South lacrosse is ready to have an unforgettable season.
