An update on the South wrestling season.

As the winter sports season ramps back up, South is looking at a good wrestling season under the guidance of Coach Kessler. Team numbers have built up steadily since pandemic, and, South wrestling might arguably be the fastest growing team in the building! The sport at South has also added a dedicated girls’ team, signalling strong growth in interest and popularity for wrestling. With only three meets under their belts, Axe wrestling  looks to dominate the rest of the season. For the boys and girls, the next meet is scheduled Friday, Jan. 31 at 5:45 at home. If you get the chance, go support South wrestling!

Spotlights:

James Duffy (sophomore, Captain):

“I joined wrestling because coming into freshman year I was a fairly fit kid. Wrestling sounded like it was a sport that would be really good for my physical health. It also ended up being good for my mental health, as well. My biggest goal is to qualify for state and take a state title.”

Koa Duerst (junior, Captain):

“I was kind of a wimp coming into high school, and my friend convinced me to start wrestling. The hardest part of this sport is the mental battle. If you go into a match with a bad mental state, you are most likely going to lose. My goal this year is to qualify for state and take a state title, as well.”
