Why Candy Corn is Villainous

By Maya Robershaw

Do you really want to eat candy made with bug secretion? Candy corn contains confectioners glaze, which is made from lac resin AKA a bug secretion. Besides that unfortunate fact, candy corn doesn’t even taste good–it has no real flavor besides sweetness. And you might be thinking, “Of course its only flavor is sweetness—it’s candy!” But consider this: chocolate bars have chocolate flavor, sometimes with cookie, caramel or nougat, and fruit candy has sourness and fruit flavor. Candy corn only has sugar, which makes it very one dimensional and not nearly as enjoyable to eat as other candies. Moving on to the texture, candy corn is grainy, and it dissolves weirdly. It’s kind of chalky yet sticky, which is not an enjoyable combination. At the same time, it’s waxy. Candy corn has many textures, and they’re all bad. And lastly, there’s trauma attached to the candy. Many of us have had the experience of your grandma offering you decade-old candy corn from a ceramic bowl. It was hard, chalky and dusty and had been sitting open in her living room for years. In conclusion, candy corn is dull, icky and unlikable.
