Boys Varsity:

South’s men’s varsity soccer is back, starting off this season with two tied games against Summit and Beaverton. They’re currently seated fifth in state with an undefeated record of 7–0–2. They plan to continue this strong streak with perseverance.

“We’re hoping to stay undefeated for the rest of the season,” South junior Dylan Gupta stated. Even though the season has been mostly positive, obstacles have also been present.

“Our team has had a lot of injuries this season,” junior Finley Thurman expressed.

Currently, the team has 12 seniors who are savoring their last high school season.

“Obviously, it’s sad that we’re losing so many seniors next season,” Gupta said, “but hopefully it also means that we’ll have a great season.”

The seniors helped to guide the underclassmen below them.

“They’ve all been here before and know how it goes, and they lead and can teach the younger guys how it works and how to be a good student-athlete,” Thurman stated.

Girls Varsity:

South’s women’s varsity soccer is back for another season, hoping to win the Emerald Derby on Oct. 15 and hopefully host a playoff game. This season, the varsity team has a lot of experienced underclassmen, which has added a lot to the team dynamic.

“I think it’s going to be really cool for the program’s development in the future years, having these players get a lot of experience now,” senior Brynn Zeigler stated.

“I think that the underclassmen bring so much to the team and push the upperclassmen to work even harder,” senior Julia Martin stated. The team has been working extra hard this season, pushing themselves 100% through the losses and making sure to stay together as a team.

“We’ve done a lot of team bonding this season which has helped with our team chemistry on the field,” Zeigler said. “We’ve also done really well to protect a positive environment.”
