Baseball

Spring in Eugene guarantees three things: April showers, May flowers, and South Eugene Baseball!

The fellas are back this year and are expected to play hard and fast. Starting the season 4-4, with a very strong performance in the Springfield Tournament going 2-1, they are hoping to keep some of that momentum and push to a winning season. With the team consisting of a majority of seniors, this season should be an exciting final season for those players.

“I think we’ve been really competitive and have had glimpses of being a really strong team that can win a lot of games,” said Zevariah Moses, a senior on the baseball team, “I think a lot of people worked hard in the off season individually. Expect big things.” The team is working towards lots of success in the future. In addition, Elijah Simmons, assistant coach for the baseball team for 10+ years, has stepped up to be the head coach of the team.

“The players were really looking forward to having a new head coach, and I think we’re really excited,” Moses said. Expect to see hard fought games filled with comradery, excitement, and a competitive atmosphere. Come watch the fellas play next against North Medford on April 27. -Alex Doig

So far, they have had an impressive score differential of 92- 41 and outscoring their last three opponents 47-10.

The girls have started the season off 0-3 with tough matchups against Churchill, Marist and Sheldon. They’re looking to bounce back with their upcoming matches, and on Saturday, April 27, they are playing Forest Grove. Let’s all try to get out and support our girls Lacrosse! -Dylan Stevens

Softball

The South Eugene Varsity Softball team has put a good start to their season, taking home multiple wins early on against Willamette, Churchill, and Corvallis. With scores of 6-2, 5-2, and 10-1 the Softball team is setting a good example for their future.

“Our defense is getting a lot better than it has in previous years,” said Grace Joseph, a senior on the softball team. “We’re struggling a little bit at the plate with some of our newer players. But overall, we’re building the program a lot.” Looking forward, the team is turning to the younger players.

“A lot of the girls are first year (players), so definitely with continuation of their work they’ll get better.” With so many younger players and lots of upcoming talent on the team, South softball looks to build on that talent and set themselves up for success in the future.

“I think that the expectation was to grow on what we had and I think we’re excelling on those expectations,” said Kelsey Hernandez. Make sure to come watch the girls play North Medford on April 27. –Liam Collier & Alex Doig
