South offers an exciting, new athletics opportunity.

Flag football is coming to South Eugene! Girls can now sign up for South’s brand new flag football team. Led by Head Coach Hansol Suh, who is currently the head JV coach for boys football, the team looks to make a splash in their first year as an official OSAA recognized sport. Nike has teamed up with OSAA to provide more than 30 schools from all around the state (Excluding southern Oregon) with a chance to play flag football this year. Nike has personally sponsored the schools, making it possible for them to have teams. South will play teams such as Thurston, Sheldon and Cottage Grove, even going as far north as South Salem.

“It’s sort of like a superconference,” Athletic Director Jim Moore explained.

At the end of the season, which will have six to seven games, there will be a full conference tournament at the Nike Headquarters in Beaverton.

More and more states are starting to provide flag football programs for high schools. Even the NFL has set up camps around the country during summer for competitive play, with grades ranging from elementary to high school. The states that currently provide programs are Arizona, Alaska, Alabama, California, Georgia, New York, Florida and Nevada, though they all have differentiating schedules, with some playing in the fall, others playing in the spring and Nevada being the sole state to play in the winter. In those states, the sport is booming and is hugely popular, and the fact that Oregon will have Nike money to back the teams should make it more appealing to those here. Expect it to be very competitive and extremely entertaining to participate in and to watch from the sidelines. Just remember to pack the stands this spring and cheer on your Axe!
