Winter activities in and around Eugene that are fun whether it snows or not!

Winter break is a time of relaxation, fun, and holiday cheer. It’s the perfect time to meet with friends or go somewhere new without the stress of school. For those not traveling, however, opportunities during the break can be more limited. Being stuck at home and doing nothing is not everybody’s cup of tea. Holiday spending can also tighten one’s budget for activities. Thankfully, Eugene is full of fun, low-cost things to do during winter break.

The Holiday Market

For those looking for holiday gifts, a bite to eat, or just interesting things to see, the Holiday Market is the perfect place. Open every weekend in December from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, it’s flexible enough to fit into a busy holiday schedule. Local artisans and restaurateurs set up booths at the market, offering a wide variety of food and high-quality items. The Holiday Market also boasts multiple live performances from local artists. It can be a great place to go with friends or family to see much of what Eugene has to offer.

Spencer Butte

As Oregonians, we’re lucky to be surrounded by lots of natural beauty. Spencer Butte is a great place to experience the natural world without needing to go far from home. Standing at over 2,000 feet, the mountain may seem intimidating, but the Main Summit trail is only a little over a mile and only somewhat steep. For more experienced hikers, the West Slope trail is a shorter, but more challenging hike. Either way, the summit offers views of all of Eugene and surrounding areas. If you’re on the snow hunt this winter, Spencer Butte is a terrific place to catch some.

The Oregon Coast

Those willing to venture to the Oregon Coast will be greatly rewarded this winter. A beach trip may not come to mind when winter break is discussed, but it can be a great time to experience all the coast has to offer. Florence, Yachats, or Newport all provide unique experiences different from the usual summer scene. Just make sure to dress warmly, as the coast can be quite chilly.

Heceta Head Lighthouse

Go in late December for a chance to see the winter migration of the whales heading from Alaska to Mexico. With a connected beach and great views of surrounding forest, Heceta Head Lighthouse can be a great place to try to spot a whale.
