The South Spirit Store is back in Axe-tion, grand reopening set for January.

The South Spirit store, a small business run by Student Government, is opening back up in January of 2024, and will be located in the cafeteria.Last spring was the grand opening, and it did not go as well as the organizers had hoped for. The store  ended up closing due to the lack of student interest and purchases. Business was slow and people seemed to have little interest in what they were selling.

“Last year we sold more vintage and thrifty types of clothing,” Sophomore Piper Hire said. “This year we are stocking with more spirit gear and sports-based merch.”

With the updated styles, they are hoping to sell more items and have more student activity. They will be selling at sports games which can be more convenient for students to stop by and pick something up.

According to students, South seems to lack school spirit, which is essential when selling South-based merch and sporty items.

“I don’t really like the sporty style, I like to wear more jeans and sweatshirts,” junior Kaden Lang said. “I think a cool pair of jeans with a South logo would be sweet.”

It will be interesting to see how their clothing sells considering these observations.Items vary in price, some pieces going for up to $20, and others, closer to $1.

“We are definitely trying to lower the prices from last year, so it’s more affordable for students,” sophomore senator Madi Zemper-Prill said. They ensure that the prices will be very reasonable and much lower than last year.

The money they raise goes toward the sports teams, the theater program, and the store itself. What gets purchased by students determines where the money goes. Earnings from sports clothing sales will go to the sports programs and the money earned from general South merch will go to keeping up with the store. According to Hire, Student Government is looking to stock club items, as well. Be sure to stop by when they open to check the new place out!
