Seven Ways to Spend You Autumn Days

As we stumble blindly through this fleeting fall season, our minds foggy with the last hints of the hot summer season, we begin to wonder what to do with a loved one or a partner on a rainy Northwest autumn day. Though having never gone on a date myself, I felt that my ideas paired with The Axe newspaper staff’s ideas would suffice for this story. So, ruminate over these possible date (or solo, if that is what floats your boat) ideas, and perhaps choose a few that you might find fun!

Bake Something Together

Who doesn’t love an aesthetic bake-while-it-rains session? Share your favorite fall recipes and don’t forget to sample your creations while you’re at it. Fall-themed baked goods, such as pumpkin coffee cake or apple cider donuts are always fun. Or better yet, come up with your own fall-themed ideas. Let the creativity rain in!

Hit Your Favorite Coffee Shop

It’s pumpkin spice latte season, so take a trip down to your favorite fall vibes coffee shop and get a hot drink and some freshly baked pastries.

Take a Hike

Walk and talk with your date while admiring the beautiful fall foliage. You could catch some autumn leaves, or take photos of each other with a cozy autumn background. Spencer Butte, Mt. Baldy, or Mt. Pisgah are all wonderful places to hike in the Eugene area.

Catch a Sporting Event Together:

Fall is a season of sports, so if you’re into that, go to a football game, soccer game, or even a pre-season basketball game (hello winter!).  Better yet, invite your date to play a sport with you, whether it’s at the track, on the turf, or on the court. Enjoy those feelings of confidence in your playmaking ability – feelings that can only surface while watching a game and giving your team advice from the bleachers – it will surely prove itself useful.

Watch a Rom-com

Romantic comedies (rom-coms) often perfectly embody the fall season, so cozy up on the couch together and enjoy a rom-com, such as When Harry Met Sally or Sleepless in Seattle. Or, if you feel so inclined to watch a series, watch an enchanting episode of Gilmore Girls or Friday Night Lights that is guaranteed to warm the heart with an everyone-lives-happily-ever-after feeling.

Pack a Fall Picnic

Put together your favorite portable lunch, head to a local park (Washington, Washburne, University, etc.) and enjoy the changing colors of the trees while chatting on a lone blanket in a sea of verdantly green grass. Engage in a picnicking activity, such as birdwatching or stargazing. Or, have fun by taking part in arts and crafts, jamming out on a guitar, painting acorns together, or writing poetry.

Head to the Farm

There’s nothing that screams “fall” more than going on a hayride at a pumpkin patch, finding the perfect pumpkin to carve, and picking deliciously ripe apples in the drizzling rain of autumn. Go to any of the many local farms in Lane County, and enjoy these cozy fall feelings paired with the thoughts of homemade baked goods, such as apple pie or pumpkin scones.
